interview with Autism Strong Foundation

Live Learn Play Preschool recently connected with the Autism Strong Foundation to explore ways to support families navigating autism. Madolin, a Master of Social Work student at UNC Charlotte, interviewed Stephanie Melish Newman, the foundation’s Executive Director, to discuss their mission and resources.

Autism Strong Foundation was founded in Waxhaw, NC, by a family whose son, Landon, has severe nonverbal autism. What started as a small fundraiser has become an organization providing financial aid, therapy scholarships, summer camp funding, and holiday relief programs for families with autistic children. They aim to ensure that no child goes without needed services due to financial barriers. In addition to financial support, the foundation hosts educational events, including the Connect Strong Conference in March, which provides information on legal rights, education options, and sensory needs, and the Build Strong Festival in October, a sensory-friendly community event promoting inclusion.

The conversation also highlighted the potential for collaboration between Autism Strong and inclusive schools and preschools like Live Learn Play. Since the preschool operates outside traditional education models, it does not receive government funding, similar to Autism Strong’s independent funding model. They discussed ways to raise awareness of available resources and the importance of building a supportive community for families of autistic children.

Stephanie expressed interest in visiting the preschool and learning more about how the two organizations might work together. With an open house event approaching, Autism Strong will help share information with families who could benefit from an inclusive preschool setting. The conversation reinforced a shared commitment to creating accessible, supportive environments where children can thrive while emphasizing the importance of spreading awareness about Autism Strong’s resources in the Charlotte area.
